We are looking for a competent and experienced data storyteller to support our company’s new mission and vision in two areas. The first is in enhancing our revenue through data cleaning, analysis, insights development, and designing editorially ready data visualisations for our clients and partners. The second is in supporting Kontinentalist’s web publication through the writing, reporting, and execution of data-informed stories regularly. The Data Storyteller will sit within the company’s Experiment and Research team, with a close relationship to the Community and Business Development team. The Data Storyteller will report to Editorial Lead, and should preferably be based in Singapore.
About Kontinentalist
Responsibilities
- Pitch, outline, research, write, and produce longform or micro data stories regularly for Kontinentalist’s web publication, with a minimum publication rhythm of 6 to 10 pieces yearly.
- Collaborate frequently with other team members or freelancers, including designers, illustrators, developers, editors and so on in the production of stories.
- Support data cleaning, analysis, visualisation, workshopping, and development of data insights on client and partnership projects.
- Assist freelancer writers and editors with research and data work as requested, including but not restricted to data collection, data cleaning, data analysis, and data visualisation.
- Contribute ideas and feedback to editorial discussion across all assigned projects, and manage the company’s editorial meetings.
- Represent Kontinentalist at speaking engagements when assigned, be it by presenting our work, or participating in discussions/panels, or our data storytelling workshop assignments.
- Support Kontinentalist's presence within the regional data journalism community and its efforts at maintaining these networks.
- Other projects as assigned.
What we look out for
- Between 3 to 5 years of working experience in writing and publishing data stories, regardless of publication platform or place. Proven ability in this is important.
- High proficiency and confidence around data, specifically with data cleaning, analysis, and use of visualisation tools. Ability to code in Python, or strong proficiency in Spreadsheets is preferred.
- Ability to also think of interesting ways to collect data where it is unavailable, especially in regards to data activism, counter-mapping, and so on.
- Familiarity with working in highly collaborative environments, especially with colleagues from significantly different skillsets.
- Strong initiative and ability to work and learn independently, and stay disciplined to set deadlines.
- Deep desire for learning and a can-do attitude, coupled with open-mindedness and a willingness to offer and receive criticism.
- Knowledge or interest in decolonial and feminist methodologies and frameworks, and how to put them into practice.
- Sensitivity to language, especially around complex ideas written for casual readers.
- A good understanding of the state of current affairs in the Asian region, especially with regards to topics concerning tech, climate change, social justice, infrastructural developments, and so on.
